In 2008, Americans voted in U\universal single-payer, not for profit health care, or so they thought. Most of Obama's supporters actually believed he stood for that - Michael Moore's movie Sicko had brought forth the need for not-for-profit health care and most Americans assumed the next Democratic President would carry that out. Only those who looked closely at the candidates knew that not-for-profit fell with the Presidential candidacy of Dennis Kucinich.
The first thing Obama did when he entered office was to align himself with Wall Street corporate executives who opposed consumer rights. These anti-consumer Democrats included Zbigniew Brzezinski, David Rockefeller, Larry Summers and Rahm Emmanuel. Instead of going to the people and finding out their health care needs, Obama sought only the advise of insurance executives, whose interests were adverse to people needing health care. The result was a bill that Obama's mother would have been ashamed of.
With Obama's selling out of the voters who had elected him in 2008, the progressive coalition fell and as did the election to replace Ted Kennedy and the various elections in 2010. The progressive base, having learned that Obama was not a progressive, deserted him. With the desertion fell the Democratic majority in the House and the super-majority in the Senate.
Now, the House Republicans have voted to end Obamacare. America never wanted Obama care but with the minimal good that the insurance program included fell with the bad, leaving Americans in much worse shape than before Obama was elected. The sad part is that the one person most responsible for the repeal of Obamacare is Obama himself. Unpopular health care bill = loss of Congress = bad guys wind up in charge.
What can be done? Lots. The Senate can refuse to accept the Republican version of death to the poor. Obama, who is more GW Bush than GW Bush was, can use the power of executive order to institute the deficit reduction program of not-for-profit health care.
Since Obama does not seem to understand the health care needs of the American people, he can put Dennis Kucinich in charge of health care in order to stop the Republicans from winning more seats in 2012.
